Deacon James (Daddy, Pop Pop, Grandpa, Gramps, Jimmy, and “JJ”) Jackson was born on September 12,1923 to Ernest James Jackson and Emma Harris-Jackson in Hoboken, New Jersey. His family later moved to New York City and he matriculated through the New York Public Schools and graduated from Public School PS) 179 in 1940.
James joined the United States Navy in 1942 and served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1946. After moving to Boston, James married the love of his life, Gertrude Gunby on October 16th, 1949.
God blessed James and Gertrude with four children, Mary, Haroul, Concetta Marie and Gina Marie.
James and Gertrude began to fellowship with the late Samuel H. Bullock founding Pastor of the Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church. James sang on the Senior Choir and assisted his wife with annual events at the church. In the mid 1970s, James was ordained a Deacon in the Lord’s church by Rev. Boykin Saunders. He continued to
attend service there regularly until 2006 under the present pastorate of Rev. Minard Culpepper. In 2006, he
started attending New Life Restoration Temple with his Grandson Minister James Hills, under the pastorate
of Bishop Bernard N. Bragg.
In the late 1970s, James lost his sight which caused him to retire from the Newton Wellesley Hospital. He
began attending the Greater Boston Guild for the Blind in West Roxbury. There he learned to play the piano,
create leather goods such as belts, wallets and key chains, ceramic sculptures, quilts, and hand bags.
James also suffered from renal failure and visited the dialysis unit at the Jamaica Plain Veteran’s Administration Hospital three times a week for the last eight years of his life. He was liked by everyone he encountered at the hospital.
He was nicknamed “JJ” by many of them.
After dealing with many illness and hospitalizations, he departed this life on Sunday, May 25th, 2008.He joins his wife, the late Deaconess Gertrude Jackson; daughter Mary Warren and grandson Albert Warren. His memory will be cherished by his son, Haroul (Norma), Concetta Marie (Lewis) and his baby girl, Gina Marie, all of Massachusetts; his grandsons, James, William, Marcos, Lewis and Arcturus. Grand daughters Kamilya (Galvin), Nakia (Ernest), Concetta (Jeron) Tamisha (Robert), Angel, Elizabeth and Rosamaria; great grand children, Juan David, Kwonateisha, Kurtis, Delquan, Shaquan, Nequan, Bradeesha, Tequan, Eyavion,Quadae and a host of extended family and friends.
Daddy, Pop Pop, Grandpa, Gramps, Jimmy and “JJ” will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Sandra Lee Memmolo

Sändra Lee (Christiansen) Memmolo, beloved wife of Ralph Memmolo of 19 years, and treasured mother of Lynne Pina and her husband Stephen of Medford, Laurie Leone and her husband Carlo of Middleton, and Margaret Boyle and her husband Mark of Rowley, died on Sunday, May 11, Mother’s Day.
Born in Long Beach, California, she was the cherished only child of Genie (Meeker) Christiansen and the late Darwin “Cloudy” Christiansen. She attended San Jose State College in California, high school in England at Bushy Park and Burtonwood U.S. Air Force Bases. Throughout her school years, Sandy was a straight “A” student. She loved reading classic literature, writing poems, and became an accomplished pianist. Her favorite works were Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Chopin’s Polynaise.
A gifted seamstress, Sandy handmade her daughters’ prom gowns. She made her daughter Laurie’s wedding gown, gowns for all three bridesmaids, and dresses for the two flower girls. She also made her grandchildren christening outfits, Easter suits and party dresses.
In 1970, Sandy made history as the first woman in television news in Arkansas as an on-air reporter for CBS KTHV-TV, Channel 11. She continued her television career as an announcer for Boise, Idaho’s Channel 4, KAID-ETV. An adventurous spirit, Sandy traversed the country three times with her three daughters. After moving to Beacon Hill, Sandy worked as Art Gallery Director in Copley Square, Executive Secretary for the Grand Lodge of Masons, Publications Editor for Boston University and as a legal secretary. The family lived together in Revere for several years.
Known as “Granny” to her 13 grandchildren, Sandy also leaves: Heather Twombley and her husband Tom, Jack Fields and his wife Ändrea; Jasmine and Chloe Pina; Veronica, Carl, Dante and Angelo Leone; and, Mark, Luke, John, Julia and Andrea Boyle. She also leaves her great grandchildren Nadia and Sophia Twombley and the soon-to-be-born little Jackie Fields.
A memorial service will be in the evening on Thursday, May 15, from 6 to 8pm in the CLC, Eagle Heights Church, 1075 Revere Beach Parkway in Revere, Reverend James E. Collins officiating.
Donations to HDSA, New England Office, 6 Courthouse Lane, Unit #12, Chelmsford, MA 01824, are preferred.

Lew, Phyllis Louise of Dorchester, daughter of the late Harry "Bucky" Lew and Florence Genevieve Lew of Springfield, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 9th at the age of 87. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Frances Johnson of Milton and Mrs. Eleanor Armstrong of Boston. Ms. Lew was an aunt to Joy Wendy Johnson and great aunt to Kiah Hufane and Paul Mc Garry, all of Milton. It could be noted that Ms. Lew's father was the first African American to play professional basketball. His picture stands in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA. Phyllis was a member of Eliot Church and will be missed by many friends. There will be a private service by the family. Donations may be made to UNICEF in Ms. Lew's memory.
